A Bit Fitting involves much more than just measuring the correct size of a bit.
My fittings involve an examination of the horse's mouth, taking into account their individual anatomy. Areas such as the bars (lower jaw bones), tongue, palate, lips and teeth all come into play when selecting a suitable style of bit.
I will then measure the horse's mouth to ascertain what size range we are working in.
The next step in one of my fittings is to assess the horse under saddle in their current bit. I will watch how the horse reacts to different movements and how well they take direction from their rider. I can also assess unbroken horses who have been mouthed and are able to be lunged.
After reviewing the above I will select a few bits that may be suitable taking into account; anatomy, reactions and rider.
The final step is to test ride in these bits to work out the best one for the individual horse and rider combination.
Competition rules are also taken into consideration so that a horse is not matched with a bit that is illegal in their discipline.
A comprehensive report is provided following a consultation on my findings and recommendations.
The number one reason to get a Bit Fitting is the comfort of your horse!
Aside from this, certain bits can enhance performance. Did you know if your horse's tongue is restricted it impedes their ability to fully engage their hind legs?!
Performance enhancements include but are not limited to: lift, shoulder control, being able to sit the horse further on the hind end for tight turns, better steering and off course .... brakes.
None off the bits I recommend are harsh in any way, they are effective due to the fact the horse is no longer resisting against uncomfortable pressure.
We see a huge difference in horses of all levels and disciplines once a more comfortable bit has been found.
With so many different bits on the market it can be difficult to know which would best suit your horse. Contact us today to help you and your horse in your journey.
